Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Vital Equipment for Community Clinic

Hot Cares and Silverstar Casino continue to ‘pay it forward’ with another heart-warming story.

It’s part of the Silverstar Pays It Forward campaign, in partnership with HOT 102.7FM and HOT Cares.

Hot Cares and Silverstar are calling for nominations, for individuals, initiatives or organizations that could do with some help. You know – the ones that really deserve some assistance.

Every Wednesday on the HOT 1027 Breakfast, a life – or lives – will be changed. See further below for contact details.

Our next story concerns Witkoppen Clinic, a non-profit organisation providing comprehensive, high quality primary healthcare and social welfare services to mostly impoverished residents of informal settlements in the far northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Vital Equipment for Community Clinic

As explained by clinic representative Elaine, when she joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast team and Silverstar’s Deon Basson on air, the clinic has been operating since 1946 and some of the essential services it provides include HIV, Covid-19 and TB screening, testing, treatment, and support; pregnancy screening; and the screening, testing and treatment of chronic medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

Witkoppen Clinic has a long-standing partnership with the Gauteng Department of Health, including training nurses to initiate and manage patients on antiretroviral treatment, and on-the-job training and mentoring of pharmacy assistants and public works programme representatives.

They also offer services for mental, maternal and child health, dentistry, and they have an in-house pharmacy.

Witkoppen Clinic cares for and supports more than 800 orphans and vulnerable children, along with providing healthcare services to more than 7000 patients a month!

But, as with all amazing organisations like this, Witkoppen Clinic has funding needs and they’ve prioritised examination lights and a mobile ENT set.

The lights are incredibly important, particularly during a pap smear examination procedure. The lights are required to perform a visual inspection of the cervix and pap smears are critically important, as they are the only means to determine if a patient has cervical cancer.

A mobile ENT set is used during a patient consultation, as the clinician inspects the ear, nose, and throat for abnormalities. Without this piece of equipment, abnormalities could be missed, and the patient could be misdiagnosed.

As the clinic relies on donors, this much-needed medical equipment is beyond their means and budget, which is a real shame, as it’s so important for them to assist their impoverished patients and give them an accurate diagnosis, including early detection of medical conditions.

But, that’s where Silverstar comes in.

As Deon explained, when Silverstar heard of the important work and services on offer to the community at Witkoppen Clinic, they knew it was of utmost importance that they offer support and assistance.

So, Silverstar will be purchasing the examination lights AND the mobile ENT set needed by the clinic!

“Gosh, you guys are so awesome,“ said Elaine. “Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how much of a difference you are making.”

But, that’s not all. Hot Cares is going to be helping Witkoppen Clinic by buying over a hundred special Christmas boxes for the clinic’s annual Christmas party for orphaned and vulnerable children!

Every Wednesday on the HOT 1027 Breakfast, a life – or lives – will be changed. See further below for contact details.

Our next story concerns Forest Farm in Bryanston, a specialist care centre for adults with cerebral palsy conditions and special needs.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Important Help for Forest Farm Centre

The wellbeing of their residents is at the heart of everything they do at Forest Farm and they strive to provide for their special needs in a manner that enables them to live rich, fulfilling lives.

This much was clear when representative Peter Lombard joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast and Deon Basson of Silverstar on air.

As Peter explained, Forest Farm brings together the very best in clinical treatment to deliver outstanding overall care and using a process of thorough assessment, they create a bespoke, holistic care pathway for everyone in their care.

“Our primary focus is individual care, as opposed to institutional care, and caring for the whole person,” said Peter.

That includes varying levels of care, dependent on the condition and needs of the resident, covering standard care, supervisory care, full care and dependent care.

Forest Farm Centre currently has 68 residents, with 18 of those adult orphans who don’t have family supporting their living costs, with their costs subsidised by the centre.

As with many similar organisations, Forest Farm relies on a grant from the Department of Social Development for its funding, with its other incomes streams the rental fees paid by residents, donations from companies, individuals, clubs, churches, and schools, and internal donations from its book and charity shops.

All of this feeds the funding model, with Forest Farm providing its residents with three meals a day, which, when you do the maths, adds up to a lot of dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans that need to be cleaned throughout the day.

To deal with that, the staff have put themselves on rosters to take on the extra kitchen duties, but that is taking time away from their residents and the assistance they need.

So, no surprise to hear that a dishwasher is desperately needed, as is a lawnmower.

That’s because, with their residents in wheelchairs or making use of walkers, for example, it is very important that their gardens are maintained to keep their residents safe.

It’s also no surprise to hear that these proposed expenses are currently out of reach for Forest Farm.

But, that’s where the fantastic partners Hot Cares has come in – just like Silverstar.

As Deon explained, everyone at Silverstar was deeply touched when they heard about Forest Farm and the care they provide, and they want to ensure the staff can continue to give their undivided time and attention to their residents.

So, Silverstar will be purchasing them a new dishwasher and lawnmower!

“That is just remarkable,” said Peter. “Heartfelt thanks and appreciation! You know, living in a wheelchair, their world is in that wheelchair, and being able to get out into a clean environment is just going to make a world of a difference and provide a breath of fresh air for our residents.”

Our next story concerns Arthur, your typical 13-year-old boy who works hard at school, enjoys his sport, has fun with his friends, and adores his mom and older sister.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Rehab Funds for Injured Little Boy

It’s just the three of them, with Nicolette a single mother who just wants to provide for her children. Things are quite tight, financially, so when Arthur’s school announced that a particular day would be a ‘market day’ at school and she didn’t have the funds for him to participate, she just kept him home, as there would be no classes to attend.

Nicolette relayed the story to the HOT 1027 Breakfast team and Deon Basson of Silverstar, when she joined them on air on HOT 102.7FM.

She told them that Arthur is well aware of what his mom does for the family and that’s why when he found himself at home, he wanted to use the opportunity to help out around the house by doing the dishes.

Unfortunately, despite his best intentions, that desire to help resulted in a disastrous accident, when a glass broke, it splintered in his hands and cut his middle finger to the bone, with the tendon almost completely severed.

No surprise that Arthur needed immediate surgery and now faces months of rehabilitation – a traumatic experience for him and his mom, but also one that brings significant pressure to the household, due to the costs that are being incurred.

Nicolette only has a basic medical aid and unfortunately it has not covered all the charges, as well as the follow-up doctor visits, never mind the rehabilitation costs for the next few months.

She just doesn’t have the budget for these unexpected costs and has even set up a Back-a-Buddy page to assist with the initial costs, whilst knowing that she will need more help with the rehabilitation and therapy costs.

On top of this, Nicolette is dealing with her own guilt, as it was her decision to keep Arthur at home on that day, but as she told the team on air, she knows she has to remain strong for her kids.

That being said, she can’t get away from the money needed for Arthur’s rehabilitation and it’s here that Silverstar and Hot Cares want to help.

As Deon explained, when Silverstar heard about Arthur’s accident and his need for support, they knew it was time to jump into action. Silverstar has a huge amount of respect and admiration for single mothers, particularly in today’s climate where most household finances are squeezed to the limit. Silverstar was so impressed with the consideration and love that Arthur showed his mother by simply wanting to do the dishes and lighten her load.

It’s with that in mind that Deon was able to break the good news to Nicolette that Silverstar would be contributing R20 000 to Arthur’s rehab and therapy!

“Thank you so much,” said a tearful Nicolette. “I hope my Arthur is an inspiration to other little boys out there.”

Hot Cares and Silverstar Casino continue to ‘pay it forward’ with another heart-warming story.

It’s part of the Silverstar Pays It Forward campaign, in partnership with HOT 102.7FM and HOT Cares.

Every Wednesday on the HOT 1027 Breakfast, a life – or lives – will be changed. See further below for contact details.

Our next story concerns the Linden Victim Support Unit, which is the sub-forum of the Linden Community Police Forum (CPF). It’s made up of volunteers who go through training sessions and are then allocated to different crime scenes according to their profile, in a bid to assist victims with trauma and counselling.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Support for Linden Victim Support

The role of the Linden Victim Support Unit’s first responders is to provide information, emotional and practical support, including advising the victims of their rights and informing them of the process that will follow. Pro bono counselling and debriefing then follows 48 hours after the event and is conducted by a qualified counsellor in a controlled environment.

The dedicated men and women of the Linden Victim Support Unit are all volunteers with full-time jobs and families of their own, yet the unit offers support to victims of crime 24 hours a day.

The unit relies on community support and donations for assistance in running the unit, which was explained by first responder, Nikki Raymond Paul, when she joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast team and Silverstar’s Deon Basson on air, to tell their story.

“The role of the trained volunteers of Linden Victim Support is to act as a buffer between the victims and the police,” said Paul. “Once our job is done, the victims are then placed in the hands of actual trauma counsellors, so their ordeal doesn’t cast a shadow over the rest of their lives.”

Another thing the Linden Victim Support Unit provides is something called ‘dignity bags’, which are taken by first responders to particularly violent crime scenes. These bags contain essential items and provide the victims with some dignity after such a traumatic event and include a knitted or fluffy toy for some emotional support as well.

But, these bags obviously cost money, along with the funds needed for the constant upkeep of the unit, the maintenance of their premises, cell phone costs to ensure there’s a 24-hour hotline, and reflective jackets for volunteers to wear at crime scenes, so they are identifiable and kept safe.

That’s where Silverstar and Hot Cares come in, with Basson able to pass on the good news that Silverstar will be contributing R20 000 towards the unit.

“Oh my goodness, Deon, that is amazing” said Paul. “And thank you so, so much. That will go such a long way and it is just incredible, thank you!”.

Our next story concerns Wings of Inspiration Elderly Care Centre in Randfontein, a non-profit company set up by twin sisters from an underprivileged background, who inherited some money from their late-aunt and decided to put it to good use.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Funding for Wings of Inspiration Elderly Care Centre

It started with 19 residents and now has nearly a hundred across two frail care centres and an old age facility. The people at Wings of Inspiration really go out of their way to try and help as many elderly people as possible and Hot Cares has worked with them before, witnessing them taking in pensioners who have nowhere to go.

Wings of Inspiration provides the elderly in need not just with a place to stay, but with a home and sense of belonging and family, and this came through when one of the twins, Anthea, joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast team and Deon Basson from Silverstar on air, to tell them a bit more about their facility.

She explained how their residents rely on a SASSA pension and are provided with a safe and secure environment, with a portion of that pension going to the upkeep of the facility.

As Anthea said, the goal is to ensure these residents spend their twilight years in as much love and comfort as possible.

Wings of Inspiration relies on donations for its funding, but also runs a craft workshop for residents, which serves the dual purpose of giving them stimulating creative activities, whilst producing craft products that can be sold to generate income for the facility.

What Wings of Inspiration does with its residents resonated with everyone at Hot Cares and Silverstar, with Deon explaining that he and his team were deeply touched when they heard about the loving home and caring environment that had been provided for the residents of Wings of Inspiration. Family, caring for those in need, making memories, and sharing experiences are so important to Silverstar and they want to do their part to ensure that Wings of Inspiration can continue to bring joy, love, and continued experiences for their beloved residents.

With that in mind, Silverstar will be donating R20 000 to Wings of Inspiration Elderly Care Centre!

“Well, I’m either going to cry and shout ‘hallelujah’!” said Anthea. “Thank you so much, Deon. That really will ease the burden and is a huge help.”

Our next story concerns Dr Natasha Ross and her team at Blue Bush Animal Clinic, which is a privately-run veterinary clinic that has been operating for 30 years. In 2009 they opened their own shelter so that they could re-home all animals that came to them injured or sick and didn’t have a home to go to.

Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Support for Blue Bush Animal Clinic

The hearts are definitely in the right place at Blue Bush Animal Clinic, as they’ve always done at least 30%-50% of their work at cost price or pro bono for non-profit organisations or needy cases. It’s clear that they’ve always tried to stick to putting the needs of the animals first and providing the same standard of care to them all, whether they arrive in a BMW or with a barefoot child from the nearby informal settlement.

This was something that definitely came through when Dr Ross joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast team on air, along with Deon Basson of Silverstar.

Here she was able to tell the team how Blue Bush Animal Clinic relied on donations for the upkeep and running of the shelter and that whilst they have some supportive clients who make generous donations, it’s just not enough to fund all the work they do and ensure they have the means to provide for the animals in their care.

On top of that, Blue Bush Animal Clinic has had some challenges in recent years, such as going from a five to a two-vet practice, which has only contributed to the financial pinch.

It was clear from Dr Ross that they need as much support as possible to be able to keep up their incredible work and care for the needy animals.

That’s why Silverstar and Hot Cares just want to help where we can, and Deon was able to break the good news to Dr Ross, on air, telling her on the HOT 1027 Breakfast that Silverstar will be donating R20 000 to the shelter!

We hope this goes some way to helping Dr Ross and her team continue running the shelter and doing the fantastic work they do.
