Itumeleng Hlongwane (Tumi) 24, has a dream. To help the kids from her community, the township of Diepsloot, northwest of Johannesburg, make constructive use of their time and find meaning in their lives.
Since 2015, Tumi has led a Saturday Development Programme, for children and teenagers who grow up in an environment of crime, substance abuse, school dropout and dysfunctional families. At the beginning of this year over 500 children and youth registered with this program, with between 250 and 300 arriving each Saturday to enjoy the safe and nurturing environment of Shumbashaba, which is within walking distance from Diepsloot, participate in the ever-growing number of activities on offer and enjoy a nourishing cooked lunch.
Through arts, drama, music, environmental, sporting and educational activities they learn different life skills, about the prevention of substance abuse and how to take care of themselves in the high-risk environment of Diepsloot. The program allows the children to learn basic skills like respect, responsibilities, conscious decision-making and helps them to develop a healthy self-esteem that is fundamental for their future and life choices.
“This project means a lot to me because it allows me to make a difference in the lives of many children. We don’t have a lot of opportunities in our communities and through this project I am able to offer these kids a chance to change their lives and most of all, to see that you can make it, that you can reach your dreams even if you grow up in the very hard and difficult environment of Diepsloot.” said Tumi.
Hot Cares will be aiding the programme by providing the following much-needed equipment to enrich the programme and improve the skills development these children desperately need.
A mobile library with brand new books, Lego and an assortment of constructional play crafts to the value of about R15 000.
Pirates Club has also kindly donated previously loved sports equipment including tennis racquets, hockey and cricket equipment.
