Hot Cares received a request from Lesley Sutton of Jeep South Africa, who sponsors our Hot Cares vehicle, to assist Brown Lekekele who runs Green Door, an emergency shelter in Diepsloot for victims of rape or domestic violence. Brown, who is a professional trauma counselor and used to work with SAPS, counsels rape and domestic violence victims that find shelter and refuge at Green Door Shelter. He counsels them and provides them with information on their next step.

Green Door also regularly provides clothes for the ladies as well as care packs with toiletries and food. From opening charges against the perpetrator to taking the matter to court to assisting in obtaining restraining orders, Brown is there to offer guidance. The organisation also focuses on sustainability and would love to be able to help the unemployed to prepare their CV’s and provide internet access to apply to jobs.

It was quite clear that Brown and Green Door needed assistance; this included a service and repair work to this vehicle which he uses to take victims to the police, to social workers and to court, he also needed a second-hand laptop and printer for printing documentation, a second-hand freezer and TV, 30m palisade fencing to secure the perimeter wall and as an on-going concern, pre-loved clothing for the ladies, non-perishable food and toys for the children.

Hot Cares got in touch with some of our partners and are delighted that together we are able to help in a few ways:

Hennie from Petrol Heads Randburg has kindly offered to service and repair the vehicle and will also give attention to the body of the vehicle;

Tony Ferguson from Rito Tech has donated a used laptop; and in our capacity as Hot Cares, we’ve purchased a freezer and one of our colleague’s children has donated her beautiful bunk beds. Hot Cares will also give R500 per month for petrol, for 4 months.

The power of a community coming together is always awe-inspiring to us and further motivates us to do more.
