Celebrating Resilience: The inspiring story of Lyle and Devon

In a world where challenges often seem insurmountable, Lyle Marks and Devon Moore shine as beacons of hope and resilience. Both young men are currently participating in a learnership program through Progression, where they’ve demonstrated incredible dedication, hard work, and a commitment to their community despite the difficulties they face.

Lyle, a vibrant young man in his 30s, is a quadriplegic who relies entirely on an electric wheelchair for mobility. His remarkable spirit is evident in his determination to succeed, utilizing a pen held in his mouth to complete tasks and support his team. Since starting his learnership, Lyle has taken on the full administrative duties of his department, showcasing his exceptional organizational skills and commitment to excellence.

Devon, a neighbor and friend of Lyle, has been a constant source of support, driving him to work daily and ensuring he is ready to tackle his responsibilities. Their friendship and collaboration extend beyond the office; both men are passionate about uplifting their community, working together to address issues of abuse, mental health, and other challenges faced by the youth around them.

Despite their stipends being far from sufficient, Lyle and Devon have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their work and community. They have supported fellow learners and initiated efforts to help vulnerable individuals, often funding their initiatives out of their own pockets.

As Christmas approaches, Justene Smith, Disability Specialist and Support Manager at Progression, has nominated Lyle and Devon for a Hot Cares Christmas surprise to acknowledge their hard work and the positive impact they have on those around them. This initiative aims to remind them of their value and motivate them for the year ahead.

Hot Cares is thrilled to contribute to their journey. Lyle will receive R20,000 for his upcoming holiday in Cape Town, easing his travel expenses and allowing him to create unforgettable memories. Devon will benefit from his daughter’s school fees for 2024, as well as an exciting overnight stay at Gold Reef City Theme Park, fostering precious moments between father and daughter. Both will also receive R5,000 shopping vouchers, ensuring they can treat themselves this festive season.

These gifts are more than just financial support; they symbolize recognition of the hard work and courage that Lyle and Devon exhibit daily. They are shining examples of how, with determination and support, individuals can create meaningful change in their lives and communities. As they embark on the new year, their stories remind us all of the power of resilience, hope, and the impact of kindness.
