A home secured, studies funded, and hope restored — thanks to Hot Cares

At just 23, Daniela Visser has become the anchor of her family — a role no young woman should ever have to carry.

When her aunt Jackie wrote to Hot Cares, she described a family that had endured more heartbreak than most experience in a lifetime. Daniela and her younger sister, Juane, lost their little brother years ago in a tragic drowning accident. Then, in 2021, they lost their mother, Madelein, to COVID complications. And just three years later, they faced another devastating blow with the passing of their father, Henrique, in July 2024.

In the aftermath, it was Daniela — still studying, still trying to build her own future — who had to take on the responsibility of signing documents, finalising her father’s affairs, arranging the funeral, and holding her family together. She works at Disa Preprimary School, had been studying towards her Bachelor of Education through UNISA, and still tries to create a sense of normality for her sister and grandparents, who live with them. Jackie put it simply: “Life is not easy… and yet they smile anyway.”

One of the biggest pressures hanging over Daniela has been the family home. Although her father left the house to her in his will and it is fully paid off, the estate cannot be finalised without transfer and related costs amounting to R84 000. For a young woman supporting her sister, covering municipal rates, and helping with school fees, that amount has been impossible to manage.

With both grandparents surviving on their SASSA pensions, and her grandfather unable to continue part-time work, every month has been a delicate balancing act between keeping the household going and putting her own dreams on hold.

Despite her determination, Daniela eventually had to pause her studies due to financial constraints — a painful setback for someone whose dream is simply to qualify as a teacher and provide stability for her family.

This Christmas, Hot Cares wanted to lift that weight. And so, live on HOT 102.7FM Breakfast, we surprised Daniela with a life-changing package of support valued at R230 000, aimed not just at easing their immediate burdens, but at securing their future.

Hot Cares will pay all transfer costs required to finalise the estate, allowing the home to be officially registered in Daniela’s name — finally giving the family the security they’ve been waiting for. To relieve the monthly pressure, Hot Cares will also cover their municipal rates and taxes for the year ahead. Daniela’s teaching journey will resume, with Hot Cares funding the remaining two years of her BEd degree. And for Juane, heading into Grade 10, Hot Cares will pay the family’s portion of her school fees for the next three years, ensuring her education continues without interruption.

To help with everyday living, the family will also receive grocery vouchers for the next 12 months, giving them breathing room after years of hardship. And because it’s Hot Cares Christmas, we filled the family home with festive warmth through a R5 000 shopping voucher and a car packed with treats, pyjamas, décor, and essentials — a reminder that joy still belongs to them too.

In total, it’s a R230 000 investment in a young woman who refused to give up, and in the family she has fought so hard to hold together.

This Christmas, Daniela and Juane don’t just have support.
They have stability.
They have dignity.
And they have hope.
