A lifeline for Rest ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary
At Hot Cares, we strive to support those who dedicate their lives to making a difference, and this festive season, our focus is on Rest Your Ass, a sanctuary for abused and neglected donkeys. Founded by Lloreen le Roux, the sanctuary has been a safe haven for over 190 donkeys since 2017, providing rescue, rehabilitation, and care for these often-overlooked animals.
The sanctuary’s mission extends beyond rescue efforts.
Weekly outreach programs in the Bela Bela township educate owners on proper donkey care, treat injuries, and distribute safe harnesses, reflecting the sanctuary’s commitment to improving animal welfare. Therapy Thursdays welcome individuals with special needs to connect with the gentle, empathetic donkeys, fostering healing and joy.
Recently, the sanctuary faced an overwhelming challenge with the rescue of 33 dumped donkeys in Thabazimbi, many of whom were injured or killed. The surviving 14 are now in quarantine, requiring specialized care, including vaccinations, deworming, and gelding for the males. With limited resources, Lloreen’s unwavering dedication ensures these animals receive the love and attention they deserve.
This Christmas, Hot Cares is stepping in to lighten the load. We’re covering the cost of gelding three male donkeys and providing essential fly masks to ensure the comfort and well-being of the newest rescues. To spread some festive cheer, we’re gifting salt licks for all the donkeys and covering the cost of hay bales until February 2025, addressing the soaring hay prices caused by the lack of rain.
With support totaling R70,000, Hot Cares is proud to uplift Rest Your Ass Sanctuary, honoring its incredible impact on animal welfare and the broader community. This initiative embodies the spirit of compassion and giving, reminding us all of the power of kindness this holiday season.
