Empowering Nastache’s mission to combat drug abuse

This Hot Cares Christmas, we’re honored to support 19-year-old Nastache van Staden, one of South Africa’s youngest qualified Detection Dog Handlers. Nastache’s inspiring journey has been defined by resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to creating safer communities.

From a young age, Nastache faced challenges that could have deterred her dreams. When a heart condition ended her aspirations of becoming an equine therapist, she found a new calling after seeing the devastating effects of drug addiction in her own family. Determined to make a difference, she chose a path that few women pursue—detection dog handling.

Nastache has already achieved remarkable success, working alongside SAPS to conduct operational sweeps in schools and high-risk areas. Her work directly contributes to combating the scourge of drug abuse, which destroys families and communities. Yet, to expand her impact, she needs to complete an accredited Dog Trainer Instructor course, which would allow her to train others and multiply the effect of her work.

Hot Cares is stepping in to ensure Nastache can continue her mission. We are covering the R28,000 cost of her course, giving her the opportunity to gain certification and further her expertise in this vital field. With this support, Nastache will not only strengthen her role in law enforcement but also inspire a new generation of women to pursue meaningful careers in unconventional fields.

Nastache’s story is a testament to the power of turning adversity into purpose. Her dedication to keeping drugs off the streets and out of homes embodies the true spirit of service. This Christmas, we are proud to invest in her journey, knowing that her work will create a lasting positive impact on communities across South Africa. Together, we are building a safer, brighter future.
