Honouring Stephen’s selfless sacrifice
This Hot Cares Christmas, we’re proud to spotlight the story of Masilo Stephen Mushwana—a man whose selflessness and loyalty remind us of the true meaning of community.
Stephen has worked for Colleen Moyle’s family since 2006. When Colleen’s husband passed away in 2021 and her business faced financial collapse, Stephen stepped up in ways that defy expectations. Despite being unable to pay him a full salary, Stephen refused to leave Colleen’s employ, honoring a promise he made to her late husband to always support her.
In a remarkable act of generosity, Stephen withdrew R35,000 from his savings to help Colleen pay rent and buy groceries during her darkest hour. Despite his own financial struggles, he prioritized her well-being, working alongside her to sell second-hand clothing and take on odd jobs to make ends meet.
At home, Stephen’s challenges continue. Living in Ivory Park without a functioning Eskom transformer, his family struggles to keep food fresh and maintain a basic quality of life. His efforts to purchase solar panels and an inverter have been admirable, but he still needs two additional batteries to make the system functional.
This Christmas, Hot Cares is stepping in to honor Stephen’s selflessness. We’re not only providing the batteries he needs but also covering the R35,000 he so generously gave to Colleen. This support will ease his burdens and allow him to better provide for his wife and three daughters.
Stephen’s story is a testament to the power of compassion, loyalty, and sacrifice. By supporting him, we celebrate the values that build strong communities and remind us of the extraordinary impact one person can have on the lives of others. This is what Hot Cares Christmas is all about—changing lives and honoring the unsung heroes among us.
