Hot cares supports teenager with kidney needs and her guardian

In a heartwarming act of kindness, Hot Cares has stepped in to support 16-year-old Anika and her guardian, Annelize, who are facing significant medical and financial challenges. Anika, a student at Muriel Brand school for disabled children in Brakpan, was born with only one kidney and suffers from a type of spina bifida. She recently started dialysis at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, which requires her to travel from Boksburg to Parktown three times a week.

Anika’s mother is unable to care for her, so her aunt, Annelize, has taken on the role of her legal guardian. Unfortunately, Annelize was retrenched last week, creating additional financial strain as Christmas approaches. Despite these challenges, Anika remains bright, brave, and cheerful, attending school on days she is not undergoing dialysis to maintain as normal a teenage life as possible.

Recognizing the difficulties they face, Hot Cares has committed to providing essential support:

  • A monthly financial assistance of R5,000 for Annelize for six months to cover petrol and living expenses.
  • A Dischem store account with R2,500 per month for 12 months to cover nappies, supplements, and toiletries for Anika.
  • A R5,000 shopping voucher each for Anika and Annelize to enjoy some Christmas shopping and retail therapy.

This support will not only alleviate their immediate financial pressures but also ensure that Anika continues to receive the care and support she needs. Hot Cares’ commitment underscores the importance of community support for families facing significant challenges, helping to make life a little easier during difficult times.
