Supporting a promising PhD student’s fight against Colorectal Cancer

In the pursuit of groundbreaking medical research, Ruvesh Pillay stands out as a dedicated PhD candidate in Biochemistry, working under the guidance of Professor Mandeep Kaur. His research focuses on a revolutionary treatment for colorectal cancer using a patented compound known as KS-01. This innovative approach aims to harness the properties of cyclodextrins—molecules with a unique structure that can extract cholesterol from cell membranes—potentially leading to significant advancements in cancer treatment.

Colorectal cancer is notoriously difficult to treat, with limited survival rates for advanced stages. Current therapies often result in harsh side effects and resistance in patients. Ruvesh’s work builds on promising previous studies that demonstrated KS-01’s effectiveness in eradicating tumors in various cancer models. By exploring its mechanism of action in relation to the WNT pathway—crucial in cancer development—Ruvesh aims to contribute to the search for more effective therapies.

Despite his remarkable academic achievements, having graduated with distinction at every level of study, Ruvesh faces significant financial challenges. Coming from a humble background, he supports his family, which includes his parents and grandparents, through limited resources. His family relies on a small pension and his father’s modest income, leaving little for Ruvesh to cover his daily living expenses.

Recognizing his dedication and potential, Hot Cares has stepped in to alleviate some of Ruvesh’s financial burdens. Wewill provide him with R5,000 per month for four months, covering essential travel and living costs until his PhD submission in early 2024. This support aims to empower Ruvesh to focus entirely on his research, ultimately contributing to a future where cancer treatment is more effective and accessible. By supporting bright minds like Ruvesh, we invest in a healthier tomorrow for all.
