Supporting Magda’s comfort and independence

This Hot Cares Christmas, we’re honored to support Magda Smit, a 47-year-old woman whose journey is defined by resilience and determination despite living with the challenges of rigid spine muscular dystrophy.

Magda’s condition causes weakness in her neck and torso, leading to severe spinal curvatures and breathing difficulties. She relies on a ventilator at night and requires a tracheostomy to assist her breathing. Despite these challenges, Magda remains a beacon of strength, maintaining as much independence as possible with the devoted support of her 88-year-old mother, Susanna.

However, the physical and financial toll of Magda’s care has become overwhelming. Susanna, who worked until the age of 80 to support her daughter, struggles to meet their needs on a limited pension. Magda’s chronic pain and discomfort, coupled with the high cost of maintaining her medical equipment, have made their situation increasingly difficult.

Hot Cares, in partnership with Silverstar, is stepping in to make a meaningful difference. We are providing Magda with an electric bed, tailored to improve her comfort and enable her to adjust her position independently, reducing pain and preventing secondary complications. We’re also covering the costs of servicing her ventilator, ensuring her respiratory support remains uninterrupted and reliable.

To bring additional joy this festive season, we’re gifting Magda and her mom a shopping voucher to brighten their Christmas. This support, valued at R55,000, will ease their daily burdens and ensure Magda can continue living with dignity and as much comfort as possible.
