HOT Cares Gets Behind 67 Blankets to Help Make a Difference to Those in Need this Winter
Hot Cares is once again getting behind the fantastic 67 Blankets initiative.
It’s the kind of initiative that’ll not only warm your heart, but hopefully someone in need this winter.
67 Blankets started nearly 10 years ago and has been making a difference to the lives of those less fortunate since then, with South Africans coming together to knit blankets and distribute to those who really need help keeping warm in winter.
This year’s theme is ‘Local Blankets is Lekka’ and 67 Blankets has been on a country-wide tour, taking in Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Bloemfontein, Daantjie in Mpumalanga, White River, Joburg, Durban and Gqeberha.
There’s a big blanket reveal in each centre and some time back Hot Cares put out a call for people to knit or crochet blankets to contribute to the greater cause.
We’ve also been putting the HOT 102.7FM presenters to work, with the 67 Blankets ambassadors teaching some of them to knit. So, look out for that funny video on social media!
Further to that, Hot Cares has a wonderful group of ladies in Soweto who have been knitting furiously, after we provided them with R67 000 worth of wool, hooks and needles, whilst 67 Blankets have their own ‘KnitWit’ groups around the country.
Many of these people are pensioners and/or come from low-income households where wool is a luxury. It costs about R240 to purchase the wool for one blanket, so the 67 Blankets initiative is also about providing the wool to knit a blanket for the less fortunate. In this way, it’s about helping people to have a purpose and feel good about themselves.
The Johannesburg stop on the 67 Blankets tour will see thousands of blankets collected and handed over to organisations that distribute to the vulnerable, and Hot Cares has been working with HOT 102.7FM to encourage listeners to make a donation, for those who want to help but don’t have the means to buy the wool.
Donations can be made via the Hot Cares website with the reference “wool” or interested parties can email info@hotcares.co.za.
This really is the chance to make a difference to someone’s life this winter and become a ‘KnitWit’ with 67 Blankets at the same time!
Similarly, if you are a prospective partner of Hot Cares, or if you are in a position to donate towards making a meaningful difference, or have a story to alert us to, or a programme you’d like to partner with Hot Cares on, please get in touch with us by emailing info@hotcares.co.za.
