Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Important School Study Camp

Hot Cares and Silverstar Casino continue to ‘pay it forward’ with another heart-warming story.

It’s part of the Silverstar Pays It Forward campaign, in partnership with HOT 102.7FM and HOT Cares.

Hot Cares and Silverstar are calling for nominations, for individuals, initiatives or organizations that could do with some help. You know – the ones that really deserve some assistance.

Every Wednesday on the HOT 1027 Breakfast, a life – or lives – will be changed. See further below for contact details.

Our next story concerns education – something incredibly important to Hot Cares.

Fortunately, Silverstar shares our appreciation of the huge value in helping schools and this story, in particular, speaks to that importance.

It all started with an email we received from the parent of a child at Far North Secondary School, which is based in Cosmo City. It serves mostly hard-working underprivileged students from Zandspruit informal settlement and the surrounding areas, and the school consistently punches above its weight, largely thanks to its dedicated teachers and visionary principal.

That principal is Mr Maropeng, who noted with concern that most of his Grade 12 learners didn’t have the space nor suitable environment to study at home, especially during examinations.

He decided that he needed to intervene or come up with a plan to meet this challenge and during his research he got the inspiration to start a study camp, having seen a similar camp at a local Diepsloot school.

The camp is now underway, having started at the end of August and running until the 29th of September. The goal is to prepare the students for their prelim exams, giving them every opportunity to achieve their best National Senior Certificate results possible.

The matriculants attending are staying over at the school, where they will study, write their exams, and, most importantly, benefit from the space and support needed during their prelims.

The students go home on Saturdays to do washing and spend time with their families, before returning to the school at 15h00 on a Sunday.

During this time the principal and teachers are all on rotation schedules to stay with the matriculants attending the camp – just another example of their incredible dedication.

But, the study camp does have needs, such as food, blankets, and refreshments for the next few weeks.

Silverstar and Hot Cares salute these fantastic teachers, as well as the students themselves, who have taken their education into their own hands. We just want to help and make this camp even more successful.

That’s why Silverstar is going to be assisting the school with a 16-litre urn for hot beverages, along with providing crockery, food, refreshments and a few ‘study treats’ for the learners too.

But, that’s not all.

Silverstar will also be donating blankets for the staff and students to ensure that everyone can rest in comfort after their long days of studying.

We hope that this will ease some of the challenges of hosting all the students and we wish the matriculants all the best for their upcoming exams!
