Supporting Headway Gauteng: A Beacon of Hope for Brain Injury Survivors

Headway Gauteng, founded in 1995 by three dedicated mothers, is a registered nonprofit organization committed to supporting adult survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI) and their families. Many of its members have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from accidents, assaults, and other incidents, facing significant physical, cognitive, emotional, and financial challenges.

The organization provides essential therapy, counseling, and a supportive community where survivors can connect with others who understand their experiences. By reducing feelings of isolation, Headway fosters mental well-being and encourages personal growth among its members.

Razaan, a third-year social work student at the University of the Witwatersrand, is currently completing her community project at Headway. Moved by the organization’s impact, she has reached out to Hot Cares for support, specifically requesting donations of old stationery for therapeutic activities. Her experience has deepened her appreciation for the work being done at Headway and the connections formed with staff and members.

Headway operates in Hyde Park and Soweto, running various rehabilitation programs, including a thriving vegetable garden. These initiatives provide members with a sense of purpose and community. Through art and creative activities, survivors can regain motor functions while also giving back, such as making items for local children’s homes.

Recognizing the importance of Headway’s mission, Hot Cares, in partnership with Silverstar, has pledged to donate stationery and activity supplies valued at up to R10,000. This support will significantly enhance the therapeutic activities available to brain injury survivors, allowing them to continue their rehabilitation journeys while enriching the community. Together, we can help Headway Gauteng empower individuals to reclaim their lives and foster a supportive network for survivors.
