Stepping up for selfless Estelle in her time of need

At Hot Cares, we often meet remarkable people whose selflessness and generosity inspire us. Estelle is one such person—a woman who has dedicated her life to caring for others, even while facing immense personal challenges.

Her story was brought to us by her sister, Rachel, who described Estelle as an angel who puts everyone else first. Estelle stood by Rachel’s side through a cancer battle and stroke, becoming her caregiver for the past three years. She also opened her home to a young boy whose family had fallen on hard times, ensuring he could complete his schooling. On top of this, Estelle provides full-time care for her 26-year-old daughter, who lives with bipolar disorder and requires constant support. And, as if that weren’t enough, Estelle regularly feeds members of her community in need.

But now, Estelle is the one who needs help. She’s experiencing severe daily pain, and doctors have discovered worrying abnormalities in her abdomen. A contrasted CT scan is urgently needed to determine the cause and provide the right treatment. Unfortunately, the wait at state hospitals is over six months, and the cost of a private scan—R17,000—is beyond her reach.
