Stepping in to help Dean see his future clearly
Dean is 18 years old and in his matric year, but instead of focusing solely on his studies, he is facing severe vision lossdue to a degenerative eye condition called keratoconus. His condition deteriorated so rapidly that one day, while walking his younger brother home, everything suddenly went dark.
Despite the challenges, Dean remains determined. He dreams of studying agriculture and farming, and thanks to his school’s support, he is doing everything possible to keep up with his studies. However, with only 30% vision in one eye and 60% in the other, even the simplest tasks have become difficult.
Dean’s journey has been filled with incredible kindness. A compassionate ophthalmologist covered the cost of two critical surgeries to stabilize his condition. But while the disease has stopped progressing, his vision has not returned. He now needs specialized permanent contact lenses, costing R30,000, to see clearly again.
As the eldest of three children and a role model for his younger brothers, Dean has taken on responsibilities beyond his years. Losing his eyesight has meant giving up rugby, where he once represented Eastern Gauteng, and struggling to keep up in school.
Hot Cares is stepping in to ensure Dean gets the lenses he needs, allowing him to complete his matric year, pursue his dreams, and reclaim his independence.
Dean, we see your strength, and we believe in your future.
