Helping Duncan Breathe and Dream Again

Hot Cares recently met a brave young boy named Duncan whose story moved us deeply. At just 12 years old, Duncan has been battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy—a rare and devastating condition that has taken away his ability to walk, move independently, and now threatens his ability to breathe on his own. This progressive disease has stripped Duncan of many of the things most children take for granted, but what it hasn’t taken is his fighting spirit.

His loving family, led by his cousin Angelique, has been doing everything they can to care for him, even as the physical and emotional toll mounts. Duncan now urgently needs a respiratory aid—specifically a BiPAP machine—to support his breathing and ease the daily strain on his weakening muscles.

When we heard Duncan’s story, we knew we had to step in. Thanks to the incredible support of One Insurance, Hot Cares will cover the full R15,000 cost of the OLV-DS6 BiPAP Sleep Apnoea Machine that Duncan needs to breathe easier and live more comfortably.

But we didn’t want to stop there.

Duncan is an avid gamer. Since he can no longer run and play like other boys, we wanted to give him a chance to escape, explore, and imagine new worlds. So, as a special surprise, we’re also gifting him a Meta Quest 3S – 128GB VR headset, compatible with his Xbox, to provide both fun and therapeutic benefits through immersive gameplay.
