Securing education for vulnerable children at Shammah Safe House

At Hot Cares, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a brighter future. Education is a fundamental right, yet for the children at Shammah Safe House, this right was at risk.

Shammah Safe House in Rewlatch, Johannesburg, provides a safe and loving home to abandoned, abused, and trafficked children. The organization currently cares for 12 children, ranging from toddlers to teenagers, many of whom have been there since infancy. Sadly, due to outstanding school fees, 10 of these children were unable to attend school, leaving them vulnerable to an uncertain future.

Adding to this heartbreaking reality, Shammah Safe House does not receive social grants for many of the children in their care. Without proper identification documents such as birth certificates, access to government support remains a distant dream. This means they rely entirely on donations and the kindness of the community to survive.

When we heard about their plight, we knew we had to act.

Hot Cares is pleased to announce that we will be covering the full outstanding school fees, ensuring these children can return to their classrooms without further disruption. Additionally, we will cover their school fees for the next six months, allowing Shammah Safe House time to work with the Department of Social Development to secure long-term support.

This contribution amounts to over R50,000, but that’s not all. We understand that education is more than just attending school – it’s about feeling confident and prepared. That’s why Hot Cares will also be providing R5,000 towards new school uniforms, helping these children feel a sense of pride and belonging as they step into their classrooms.

Katherine, the dedicated founder of Shammah Safe House, has poured her heart into giving these children a second chance at life. Through our support, we hope to ease their burden and provide stability so that these young lives can focus on what truly matters – learning, growing, and dreaming of a better future.
