HOT Cares Makes Valuable Contribution and Continues to Support N3 Highway Volunteers
Every year we run the Hot Cares Christmas and it gives us the opportunity to materially change a number of lives over the course of just a couple of weeks.
That’s on top of the regular programmes Hot Cares is involved in and the stories that you see in this blog every week.
Well, one of the Hot Cares Christmas stories this past festive season saw us step in to help a group of people who do fantastic volunteer rescue work near Warden, along the N3 highway, which connects Johannesburg and Durban and is one the most dangerous routes in South Africa.
That Hot Cares Christmas gift covered their expenses – accommodation, petrol, food, medical supplies, toll gates, and rescue supplies – for a couple of ‘trips’ and the story garnered so much interest that Ecomed dived in to supply the team with a much-needed automated external defibrillator, valued at just over R100 000!
But, the needs of this team are ongoing and you can see why.
According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 1.3 million people die each year worldwide as a result of road traffic crashes and 93% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in low and middle-income countries, like South Africa.
Incredible numbers, and it’s no surprise to hear that we have one of the worst countries in the world, with regards road death numbers, making this story even more important.
Things only get busier and more dangerous during peak season, as holiday makers make their way to the coast. That includes the upcoming long weekends and Easter holidays.
The rescue team of volunteers go down approximately five times a year and typically stay in basic accommodation. They are generally a team of 4-6, which includes two rescue technicians who are medically proficient, 2-3 paramedics, and most times a trauma doctor and counsellor.
“Some scenes, as you can imagine, are pretty hectic,” said team member Peter. “None of our professionals have ever been paid and they do this as a way to give back to the community for the privilege they are afforded to help people.”
People like this who give of their own free time just to help others in serious need are truly special and Hot Cares was adamant that we wanted to help. So, we didn’t hesitate when this request came across our desk at the end of last year, but we want to continue helping this special team do the great work they do.
So, Hot Cares will be funding the team’s trips for the upcoming March long weekend, the Easter weekend, the public holiday weekend at the end of April, the 16 June long weekend, and the public holiday weekend in late-September.
Total value – approximately R48 000!
