Hot Cares helps aspiring nurse stay in school and chase her calling
At Hot Cares, we often come across stories that speak to the heart—and Angel’s is one of them. Angel Mndebele is a bright, determined young woman who has always dreamt of becoming a nurse. She completed her matric with a bachelor’s pass and was successfully accepted into the Diploma in Nursing program at Netcare after passing a rigorous entrance exam.
But despite her academic success and burning passion to help others, Angel faced a heartbreaking obstacle—finances. Her uncle paid a R16,000 deposit to secure her place, but with no further funds available, she faced deregistration if the full amount wasn’t paid. Her attempts to get a student loan through Nedbank went nowhere, and because Netcare is a private institution, she couldn’t get NSFAS funding either.
Angel’s mother is a domestic worker and unable to support her financially, and the person who brought her story to us is an elderly woman who has known Angel since childhood and believes deeply in her potential.
Hot Cares was moved by Angel’s story. We saw a young woman with a clear calling and the determination to follow it. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that we are covering the full cost of her first year of studies—R68,349—and, in addition, will be supplying her with study materials for the year. This brings our total support to R80,000.
We believe that Angel will go on to be a compassionate and skilled nurse who will give back to her community in the most meaningful way. This is not just an investment in her future—but in the future of healthcare in South Africa.
