From trauma to triumph: restoring hope for Ciska

At Hot Cares, we’re constantly inspired by the strength and determination of individuals who rise above life’s most challenging moments. One of those individuals is Ciska van Niekerk.

Ciska is a passionate and experienced freelance nature guide who has spent over a decade sharing the magic of the Kruger National Park with visitors from around the world. But her life changed in an instant on January 13th, 2025, when she was shot during a home robbery in Nelspruit. Despite efforts to save her leg, complications from her autoimmune condition led to an amputation below the knee.

As a single mother and breadwinner, Ciska’s livelihood relies on her mobility. Without a prosthetic leg, she’s unable to return to the work she loves, and the public health system’s long waiting list left her facing at least a year without income. Her teenage son has even put his studies on hold to help care for her.

But Ciska’s determination never wavered. Through her own research, she found a private option that could get her back on her feet by May—if she could raise the funds.

Thanks to the incredible support of One Insurance, that’s where Hot Cares stepped in.

In recognition of Limb Loss Awareness Month and Ciska’s incredible spirit, Hot Cares and HOT 1027 are proud to fund her prosthetic leg. This donation doesn’t just restore mobility—it restores hope, dignity, and the opportunity for Ciska to return to the bushveld she loves, guiding others once again.

Ciska, your strength is remarkable, and we are honoured to support your journey forward. You’ve helped others explore nature’s wonders—now it’s our turn to help you rediscover yours.
