From kennels to compassion: Gideon’s grassroots rescue gets a boost

At Hot Cares, we believe that compassion can be a powerful force for change—and Gideon Morar is living proof of that. The founder of Gideon’s Animal Outreach has dedicated his life to the animals (and people) of some of Gauteng’s most underserved areas, and we were truly humbled to learn more about his story.

After working for over a decade at the Johannesburg SPCA, Gideon saw the urgent need for deeper, grassroots outreach in townships and rural settlements—places where animals often suffer not from cruelty, but from poverty and lack of access. In 2020, he took a leap of faith and launched his own NPO, working solo from the frontlines with only his bakkie, his experience, and his heart.

Today, Gideon runs emergency rescues, delivers food, investigates cruelty cases, supports community pet owners, and even educates young children about the humane treatment of animals. What’s remarkable is that he doesn’t stop at the animals—many of the people he meets are also in crisis, and his outreach brings hope and dignity to them too.

So when his bakkie broke down and much-needed funds had to be diverted away from essential medical supplies, we knew we had to step in. With the help of our kind-hearted friends at Silverstar, we’re proud to donate R20,000 worth of deworming medication, tick and flea treatments, and brand-new animal transport cages to support Gideon’s life-changing work.

This is more than a donation—it’s a lifeline. And it’s a reminder that real change often starts with one person, doing what they can, with what they have, where they are.
