After years of challenges, Lindokuhle finally gets the chance to see a brighter future

For 14-year-old Lindokuhle, life has not always felt as beautiful as the meaning behind her name.

“Lindokuhle” means waiting for something good — while her second name, “Nonceba”, means grace. But after years of health challenges, bullying, and feeling different, she once asked her mother a heartbreaking question: why she had been given names that felt so far removed from her own life.

From a young age, Lindokuhle battled severe eczema that left her constantly scratching and struggling with her confidence. When her skin finally improved, new challenges followed as problems with her eyesight led to glasses — and more teasing from other children.

“She started wearing them when at home, but when going to school, she would hide them in her bag the whole day,” her mother Ntombi shared.

“They would call her Four Eyes, so she didn’t want to wear them. I didn’t know she wasn’t wearing them at school because when she came home she would have her glasses on — but at school she would hide them in her bag.”

Eventually, specialists discovered Lindokuhle had keratoconus — a condition affecting the shape of the cornea and causing her vision to deteriorate. The longer the delay in treatment, the greater the risk to her eyesight.

Ntombi, a devoted mother and domestic worker, did everything she could to help her daughter. She saved for months, made sacrifices, and even arranged for money to be deducted from her salary to try and cover the cost of the procedure.

But despite her determination, the R37 000 needed for surgery remained out of reach.

That’s where Hot Cares stepped in.

Thanks to the kindness of Hot Cares donors, Lindokuhle’s eye surgery costs will be covered — giving her the chance to protect her vision, rebuild her confidence, and focus on her dreams of one day becoming a doctor and a chef.

“Oh my goodness… is this a prank or something? I can’t believe this. She’s going to be so happy today. This is the best news ever!”

And once she has recovered, Hot Cares will also help create another special memory — treating Lindokuhle and her family to a celebratory lunch, marking her very first visit to a restaurant.

Because sometimes, a little help can remind someone that good things — and grace — can still find their way.
