Silverstar pays it forward kitting Thandanani’s learners for success

Thandanani House of Refuge in Randpark Ridge is more than a safe-house—it’s a home where children who’ve faced abandonment, abuse, or deep loss are wrapped in care and given a chance to dream again. Seventeen children currently live at Thandanani, supported by house parents, a social worker, and a small team who make sure each child is seen, heard, and equipped for the future.

The story began in the late 1990s, when teachers at Kingsway School noticed children from the nearby Zandspruit community who urgently needed protection. Volunteers secured land in 2001, welcomed the first children in 2003, and—after many years of service—relocated the home to Randpark Ridge in December 2023 to continue their mission. Over 100 children have passed through Thandanani’s doors, each one offered stability, education, and the love of a family.

Right now, Thandanani’s most practical need is simple but powerful: school uniforms, sturdy bags, and proper shoes. These aren’t just items—they’re instruments of dignity and belonging. A well-fitted uniform helps a child feel equal to their peers; a strong school bag signals readiness; a good pair of shoes protects little feet and opens the way to learning and play.

As Paul McKibbin, Chairman of Thandanani, puts it: “A strong school bag doesn’t just carry books; it carries a child’s belief that tomorrow can be better.”
