A gift of sound: How Hot Cares and Silverstar changed Divan’s life

When ten-year-old Divan lost the hearing in his right ear after a bout of mumps, his world became a quieter, more difficult place to navigate. Conversations became a challenge, lessons at school were harder to follow, and even simple joys like hearing laughter or his coach’s whistle felt out of reach.

But through it all, Divan never stopped smiling.

Despite his hearing loss, he continues to shine both academically and socially, inspiring everyone around him with his determination and positivity. He dreams of one day becoming an Olympic swimmer — and when his mom couldn’t afford his swimming fees, Divan began baking and selling treats to raise the money himself. It’s that spirit that caught the attention of Hot Cares.

Divan’s mom, Debbie, is a single parent working full-time in the administration department at his school. She’s done everything she can to support him, but the hearing aid he needs costs R37,000 — well beyond what she can afford. Thanks to the Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss in South Africa, R20,000 was raised, but there was still a R17,000 shortfall standing between Divan and the hearing aid that would change his life.

That’s where Silverstar and Hot Cares stepped in.

Together, they covered the remaining R17,000 to ensure Divan can finally hear clearly, learn with confidence, and keep chasing his dreams — both in the classroom and in the swimming pool.

For Divan, this hearing aid means so much more than sound. It means connection, safety, and belonging. It’s the chance to live fully in every moment — to hear the laughter of his friends, the lessons of his teachers, and the encouragement that will carry him toward his dreams.
