Giving rescue dogs the chance to finally be seen
Behind every rescue dog is a story waiting to be seen — and sometimes, all it takes is one photograph to change everything.
Across South Africa, countless dogs sit patiently in shelters or temporary homes, hoping someone will notice them. But as the team at Barking Mad explains, many of these animals are overlooked not because they lack personality or love to give — but because they’ve never had the chance to be properly seen.
Barking Mad is a national network dedicated to connecting shelters and the public to responsibly rehome animals. Their platform helps match dogs with loving families while supporting shelters across all nine provinces.
Yet shelters are under enormous pressure. Many are struggling to stay open as more animals are surrendered due to housing restrictions, lifestyle changes, or financial hardship. And that’s where a simple but powerful idea comes in.
“A single photo can change a life.”
A well-captured image can reveal a dog’s spirit — the curiosity in their eyes, the tilt of their head, the warmth of their personality. It creates the moment of connection that turns a scrolling stranger into a future owner.
But photography alone isn’t enough. Food remains one of the biggest ongoing needs for shelters across the country.

That’s why Hot Cares stepped in to support Barking Mad with two important contributions: funding for much-needed dog food to assist shelters during their visits, and support for professional video content that will help showcase adoptable dogs and share successful adoption stories.
Because every time a dog finds a home, it creates space for another rescue animal waiting for help.
It’s a cycle of compassion — and it starts with someone choosing to care.
At Hot Cares, that’s what matters most. You can read more about how your Teddython donations helped the Student Nutrition and Progress Programme – and others! – at hot1027.co.za.
