For one little boy, a life-changing gift means more moments to just be a child

For most families, a simple outing is just that — simple.

A drive in the car. A therapy session. A few precious moments in the sunshine.

For little Mateo and his family, every trip beyond home requires planning, equipment, and constant vigilance.

Born in August 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Mateo’s life began with a fight few could imagine. Just days after coming home, he was rushed to hospital in critical condition. What followed was a diagnosis of a rare lifelong metabolic disorder, along with a series of complex medical challenges that continue to shape every day of his young life.

Yet through it all, Mateo’s spirit shines.

Despite being non-verbal and fully tube-fed, he continues to surprise everyone around him with his determination.

He attends weekly therapy sessions and is steadily learning to sit independently and bear weight on his legs. Every milestone is hard-won. Every smile is a triumph.

But one of the biggest challenges facing the family has been managing Mateo’s oxygen needs. Because of permanent lung damage, he requires oxygen while sleeping and sometimes during the day — with power outages turning an already difficult situation into an urgent one.
