After years of adapting, Zino is ready to write her own story

For Grade 12 learner Zinokhanyo “Zino” Nyangule, completing matric represents far more than an academic milestone – it’s another example of the courage and determination she has shown throughout her life.

Zino was just eight months old when she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma – a form of cancer that affected her eyes. As part of her treatment, both eyes had to be removed, leaving her completely blind.

But that has never stopped Zino from moving forward.

From Grade 1 to Grade 11, she attended Prinshof School for the Blind, where she learnt through Braille and used a Braille machine throughout her schooling.

However, her journey took another difficult turn when the cancer returned. After facing a recurrence in 2020, Zino and her family received more devastating news in 2025 when the cancer came back again, this time affecting her left knee.

Her treatment meant she missed a significant part of her Grade 12 year, but Zino refused to give up on her dream of completing school.

Now in remission, she has enrolled with Brainline Online Schooling and is working towards completing her matric over two years.

The move to online learning has brought new challenges, as Zino adjusts from Braille to a digital learning environment. Her mom, Zuzeka, says the transition has been difficult – and expensive – but she knows the right tools will make all the difference.

“These devices, she’s also going to need them when she’s in university,” she explained.

For Zino, speech-to-text software is not just a piece of technology – it represents independence. It will allow her to take notes, complete assignments, study more effectively, and continue learning in her own way.

“It would really change everything for me,” said Zino. “It would have a great impact on my life because I’d be able to study my notes better.”

That’s why Hot Cares is stepping in to assist by purchasing the speech-to-text software Zino needs, valued at up to R20 000.

The donation will support Zino through matric, but its impact will continue long after school – helping her as she works towards further studies and greater independence.

Overwhelmed by the support, Zino thanked Hot Cares for helping remove another obstacle from her path.

“Thank you so much. That would really mean a lot to me because I really need it. I really appreciate this help.”

Thanks to the generosity of those who support Hot Cares, young people like Zino are given more than assistance – they’re given the tools, confidence, and opportunity to keep moving forward.

Because sometimes making a meaningful difference starts with helping someone share their own voice.
