For Matthew Ncube, cooking has never just been about food.

It’s about family. It’s about bringing people together. And it’s about creating moments that leave people smiling.

Now, thanks to Hot Cares and Guvon Academy, that lifelong passion is finally becoming the career he’s always dreamed of.

Raised by a single mother, Matthew grew up watching the sacrifices she made to provide for their family. Those experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and an unwavering determination to build a better future. But they also inspired something else.

A love of cooking.

“My mum always made exquisite meals,” Matthew says with a smile. “I always wanted to surpass her… to be able to serve her five-star, ten-star meals and just put a smile on her face.”

What began as childhood curiosity soon became a calling.

For the 22-year-old aspiring chef, the kitchen became a place where creativity met purpose. He realised food had an incredible ability to connect people and create lasting memories.

“I’ve seen what food does… how it brings people together. I really just want to bring so much joy of that nature into this world.”

Matthew has always dreamed of opening his own restaurant, creating a space where great food, culture and community come together. But despite his talent and determination, the financial barriers to professional culinary training seemed almost impossible to overcome.

That’s where Hot Cares and Guvon Academy stepped in.

After receiving an overwhelming number of inspiring applications for the 2026 Guvon Chef’s Bursary, the judging panel faced the difficult task of selecting just one recipient. Matthew’s passion, resilience and determination convinced them he was ready to make the most of an extraordinary opportunity.

The prize is nothing short of life-changing.

Valued at R350,000, the three-year bursary includes tuition towards the Occupational Certificate: Chef qualification, textbooks, a professional knife set, chef uniforms and internationally recognised Highfield Qualifications from the UK.

For Matthew, it’s the chance to transform a dream into a profession.

For Hot Cares, it’s another opportunity to invest in someone whose passion deserves the chance to flourish.

One day, Matthew hopes to welcome guests into a restaurant of his own.
