Hot Cares helps give 65 abandoned cats a second chance

For 65 abandoned cats, a frightening chapter of neglect is finally giving way to the possibility of safe, loving homes – thanks to the determination of animal rescuer Sarah Murphy and support from Hot Cares.

Sarah, who runs Shady Paws animal rescue, stepped in when the large group of cats was abandoned and urgently needed shelter, food and medical attention. Many were in extremely poor condition, suffering from fleas, sores and various health problems.

Since taking responsibility for them, Sarah has devoted her time, energy and personal resources to helping the cats recover. Three have already received veterinary treatment, with the attending vet offering discounted rates wherever possible, and Sarah is currently working to rehome approximately 15 to 20 of the animals.

However, caring for 65 cats every day brings enormous ongoing costs. Food, cat litter and veterinary bills quickly add up, placing increasing pressure on Shady Paws’ limited resources.

Determined that the cats should still receive nutritious meals, Sarah has even been preparing their food herself. She cooks rice and makes a wholesome gravy from chicken offcuts, finding creative ways to stretch every rand without compromising their care.

Moved by Sarah’s commitment and the desperate needs of the cats, Hot Cares is stepping in with practical, sustained assistance. Hot Cares will contribute R10,000 per month for four months towards cat food and litter, as well as an additional R20,000 towards veterinary bills – support valued at R60,000 in total.

The contribution will help protect the progress already made, give more cats access to essential treatment and allow Sarah to focus on restoring their health and finding suitable homes.

These animals may have begun their journey neglected and unwanted, but Sarah’s compassion has already changed their story. With this support, 65 vulnerable cats now have a genuine second chance at comfort, recovery and a family of their own.
