Behind the sirens: supporting the volunteers who keep Pretoria safe
When crisis hits, the people who arrive first rarely ask for anything in return. Pretoria’s Emergency Support Team (EST) is a registered non-profit made up of 25 fully trained volunteer medical professionals who respond to fires, overdoses, road accidents, and mental-health emergencies — then return to the community to run food and blanket drives for families in need.
Led by HPCSA-accredited director Xander Loubser, EST is built on professionalism and compassion. In just the last few months, their volunteers have been called on dozens of times — often in the dead of night — to provide urgent care before formal emergency services could reach the scene.
“We don’t wait for the call to be convenient. If someone’s life is on the line, we’re there — whether it’s a house fire at midnight or a motorbike crash on a busy road,” explains one of the team members.
Answering every kind of emergency
The variety of situations they face highlights the breadth of their skills. In recent weeks alone, EST volunteers stabilised a patient after a residential fire in Daspoort, treated a severe fall injury while awaiting Gauteng EMS, delivered advanced life support at a motorbike crash in Waverley, intervened in an overdose in Pretoria West, and helped de-escalate a life-threatening mental-health crisis.
And once the sirens fade, their community work continues. Between calls, they’ve distributed warm meals, blankets, beanies, clothing, and toys — restoring dignity as well as health.
“It’s not just about saving lives at the scene. It’s about making sure people feel seen and cared for afterwards too.”
Why Hot Cares and Ecomed are stepping in
This is why Hot Cares, together with our friends at Ecomed, is stepping in to strengthen EST’s frontline capacity. Their wish-list is practical and urgent: medical consumables, oxygen and medical bags, reflective vests, and field gear. These aren’t luxuries — they are lifelines that help keep both patients and volunteers safe.
Every oxygen cylinder makes it possible to keep a patient breathing. Every reflective vest helps ensure responders are visible on dark, dangerous roads. Every stocked medical bag allows a trained volunteer to do their work effectively under pressure.
Making the difference together
With Ecomed’s support, Hot Cares is ensuring EST’s volunteers are better equipped for the next call — whether that’s a blaze threatening a family home, a car pile-up on the highway, or a neighbour struggling with a mental-health emergency. Because the reality is that these calls never stop, and neither does EST.
In a city that never sleeps, it is deeply reassuring to know that a group of dedicated volunteers is ready to answer — without hesitation and without expectation. By helping them get the gear they need, we’re making sure the people who stand between crisis and hope can do their best work.
If you’d like to help keep this trusted, volunteer-run service on the road, consider contributing toward consumables and gear. Together, we can make sure that when the next call comes in — and it will — Pretoria’s Emergency Support Team is ready to respond.
