Hearing more, achieving more: Thabo’s path forward

When Hot Cares first met Thabo, he was a young boy with no family, no documentation, and a deeply uncertain future. Found living in an informal settlement, his early life had been marked by hardship — until he found safety at St Mary’s Children’s Home.

Profoundly deaf, Thabo was enrolled at St Vincent’s School for the Deaf, where his journey truly began. It was there that Hot Cares was first called on to help — stepping in with hearing aids that would change his life forever.

The moment they were switched on remains unforgettable.

As Thabo walked out, giggling and mimicking the sounds around him, a whole new world had opened up.

But what stood out even more was his heart. When given gifts, Thabo insisted on sharing them with the other children at St Mary’s — a reflection of the kindness that has defined him ever since.

Over the years, Hot Cares has remained part of his journey — supporting him through speech therapy, counselling, and the challenges of growing up.

Today, now in his mid-teens, Thabo has blossomed into a resilient and compassionate young man.

But hearing aids don’t last forever. As he grew, his needs changed — and recently, he began struggling to hear clearly in class again.
