From limited movement to new possibilities: Avela’s world opens up

Sometimes the kindness we show others finds its way back in the most unexpected ways.

During a recent stay in the Drakensberg, a guest met Khanya Dube while she was working as a receptionist at the lodge. Over the course of the week, the two struck up a warm connection, and Khanya shared the story of her young daughter, Avela. Deeply moved by what she heard, the guest later reached out to Hot Cares, hoping something could be done to help the little girl.

Despite the obstacles, Avela’s world has been filled with determination and love.

Her grandmother has played a remarkable role in her development, patiently helping her learn to sit, crawl and eat solid foods. Through patience, dedication and sheer perseverance, this family has helped Avela reach milestones that once seemed far out of reach.

But one essential tool was still missing: mobility.

Recognising how life-changing it could be for a young child, Hot Cares stepped in to provide Avela with a specially suited wheelchair — giving her the freedom to explore her surroundings, participate more fully in family life, and experience the simple joys of childhood.

To support the family further, Hot Cares also arranged physiotherapy guidance for Avela’s grandmother, empowering her with professional techniques to continue assisting with exercises and care.

And because childhood should also include moments of pure joy, Avela was treated to a special shopping outing where she could choose new clothes, décor for her room, and items featuring the cartoon characters she loves most.
