From neglect to nurture: five dogs begin their healing journey

At Hot Cares, we’ve seen many heartbreaking cases over the years, but few have shaken us quite like this one. Five dogs—starving, skeletal, and scared—were recently rescued from a home where neglect had been allowed to fester for far too long. These animals weren’t just underfed. They were malnourished to the point of near organ failure, their bodies barely surviving the slow cruelty of starvation.

Thankfully, The Dog Trust, an NPC and PBO registered since 2020, stepped in. Known for their tireless work in the townships, their team didn’t hesitate—they immediately removed the dogs and brought them to safety. What followed was the beginning of a long, emotional road to healing. These animals, now lovingly referred to as “the five skinnies,” are receiving round-the-clock care: five small meals a day, warm jerseys, hot water bottles, and love. Slowly, their bodies are starting to recover—but the emotional trauma runs deep.

This isn’t just about food. It’s about dignity. It’s about choosing compassion in a world where cruelty often goes unchecked.

Hot Cares has committed R25 000—R5 000 per dog—to help cover the critical veterinary care and nutritional support these survivors need. They are currently on Hills Puppy Food, and The Dog Trust hopes to include Royal Canin Recovery Liquid to aid their rehabilitation.

These five souls are the lucky ones. For every animal rescued, countless others still suffer. But together, we can be the difference.
