Helping the Baby Therapy Centre give every child a fair start

At the heart of Pretoria’s Baby Therapy Centre (BTC) is a simple belief: every child deserves the chance to grow, learn and move with dignity. For more than 30 years, this remarkable organisation has supported children with developmental delays and special needs through early-intervention therapies — from physio and occupational therapy to speech, music, play and hydrotherapy. Their work is life-changing, especially in a child’s first 1 000 days, when the right therapy can transform an entire future.

But BTC has been facing challenges no child should ever have to navigate. The perimeter fence surrounding the centre — once a protective boundary — has deteriorated to the point of posing a safety risk. And for many of their children who use wheelchairs or walkers, simply getting to therapy has become a daily obstacle. Uneven outdoor surfaces make mobility dangerous, often forcing staff to physically carry children to their sessions. For children striving for independence and families carrying heavy emotional and financial burdens, this is a heartbreaking reality.

When Hot Cares learned of their situation, we were deeply moved by the courage of the children, the dedication of the staff and the resilience of the families who walk this journey every day. Their only request was for safety, dignity and access — the very things every child should be able to rely on.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Hot 1027 listeners, Hot Cares is stepping in this Christmas to fully cover the cost of a new secure perimeter fence and a wheelchair-accessible path and ramp, to the value of R88 000. This upgrade will restore safety and independence, allowing every child to reach their therapies freely, confidently and with pride.
