Hot Cares and Silverstar Pay it Forward with Vital Equipment for Community Clinic
Hot Cares and Silverstar Casino continue to ‘pay it forward’ with another heart-warming story.
It’s part of the Silverstar Pays It Forward campaign, in partnership with HOT 102.7FM and HOT Cares.
Hot Cares and Silverstar are calling for nominations, for individuals, initiatives or organizations that could do with some help. You know – the ones that really deserve some assistance.
Every Wednesday on the HOT 1027 Breakfast, a life – or lives – will be changed. See further below for contact details.
Our next story concerns Witkoppen Clinic, a non-profit organisation providing comprehensive, high quality primary healthcare and social welfare services to mostly impoverished residents of informal settlements in the far northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
As explained by clinic representative Elaine, when she joined the HOT 1027 Breakfast team and Silverstar’s Deon Basson on air, the clinic has been operating since 1946 and some of the essential services it provides include HIV, Covid-19 and TB screening, testing, treatment, and support; pregnancy screening; and the screening, testing and treatment of chronic medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
Witkoppen Clinic has a long-standing partnership with the Gauteng Department of Health, including training nurses to initiate and manage patients on antiretroviral treatment, and on-the-job training and mentoring of pharmacy assistants and public works programme representatives.
They also offer services for mental, maternal and child health, dentistry, and they have an in-house pharmacy.
Witkoppen Clinic cares for and supports more than 800 orphans and vulnerable children, along with providing healthcare services to more than 7000 patients a month!
But, as with all amazing organisations like this, Witkoppen Clinic has funding needs and they’ve prioritised examination lights and a mobile ENT set.
The lights are incredibly important, particularly during a pap smear examination procedure. The lights are required to perform a visual inspection of the cervix and pap smears are critically important, as they are the only means to determine if a patient has cervical cancer.
A mobile ENT set is used during a patient consultation, as the clinician inspects the ear, nose, and throat for abnormalities. Without this piece of equipment, abnormalities could be missed, and the patient could be misdiagnosed.
As the clinic relies on donors, this much-needed medical equipment is beyond their means and budget, which is a real shame, as it’s so important for them to assist their impoverished patients and give them an accurate diagnosis, including early detection of medical conditions.
But, that’s where Silverstar comes in.
As Deon explained, when Silverstar heard of the important work and services on offer to the community at Witkoppen Clinic, they knew it was of utmost importance that they offer support and assistance.
So, Silverstar will be purchasing the examination lights AND the mobile ENT set needed by the clinic!
“Gosh, you guys are so awesome,“ said Elaine. “Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how much of a difference you are making.”
But, that’s not all. Hot Cares is going to be helping Witkoppen Clinic by buying over a hundred special Christmas boxes for the clinic’s annual Christmas party for orphaned and vulnerable children!
