The simple act of care that’s changing lives for Brixton’s elderly

At Hot Cares, we are always moved by organisations that quietly change lives, one act of kindness at a time. Family Care Ministries is one of those partners – serving communities across Gauteng with food relief, mentorship, and spiritual support rooted in the simple but powerful belief that love in action can change the world.

One of the communities closest to their hearts is the elderly living in five care complexes in Brixton. Once a month, usually on the third Sunday, Family Care Ministries visits these homes to deliver hygiene care packs to more than 120 pensioners. By that point in the month, many residents have run out of essentials like soap, toothpaste, shampoo and other personal care items, as their SASSA grants are already stretched to the limit.

For these gogos and grandpas, something as small as a bar of soap or a clean towel is not just about feeling fresh – it’s about dignity, self-respect, and the comfort of knowing they have not been forgotten.

When Hot Cares heard about the growing need in Brixton, we reached out to our long-time friends at Silverstar. As Deon Basson from Silverstar explains, the quiet dignity of these residents – and the daily struggle just to stay clean and comfortable – deeply resonated with their team.

Together with Silverstar, Hot Cares is stepping in to support the work of Family Care Ministries by helping to fill these hygiene care packs with the essentials that mean so much. Each item is a reminder to the elderly residents of Brixton that they are seen, valued and loved.
