When time mattered most, Hot Cares stepped in for Kevin

When Kevin Peel and his wife Chantal walked into the HOT 102.7FM studio, their situation was almost impossible to comprehend.

Kevin’s kidneys had failed. His dialysis treatment — the very thing keeping him alive — was not covered by medical aid yet. Because of a waiting period, the life-saving treatment he desperately needed would only be covered months later.

Until then, every session had to be paid for privately.

For Kevin and Chantal, both paramedics who had spent years helping others in their community, the numbers simply didn’t add up.

Dialysis isn’t something that can wait.

“Every dialysis session is keeping him alive,” Chantal explained at the time. “Every missed session brings us closer to the unthinkable.”

Kevin’s health had already deteriorated significantly, and the pressure on the family was immense. Alongside the medical crisis, there was the emotional weight of what this could mean for their daughters — one who had just finished matric in 2025, and a younger daughter still at school.

Kevin wasn’t just fighting illness. He was fighting to stay present in the lives of the two girls who needed their father.

Hot Cares stepped in to make sure that fight could continue. Recognising both the urgency of Kevin’s condition and the extraordinary service Kevin and Chantal had given to others as paramedics and first-aid trainers, Hot Cares committed up to R140,000 to cover Kevin’s dialysis for six critical months.

That support created the bridge the family so desperately needed — carrying Kevin safely through the waiting period until his medical aid benefits could begin.

“They’ve spent their lives helping others,” said the Hot Cares team. “Now it was our turn to help them.”

Because sometimes the most powerful thing a community can give is time.

Time for a father to remain with his daughters.
