Inside Door of Hope’s quiet fight for South Africa’s babies

In a quiet corner of Johannesburg stands a stainless steel box that has saved over 500 lives.

It’s called the Baby Saver—a secure drop-off hatch built into the wall of Door of Hope Children’s Mission, where desperate mothers with no support and nowhere to turn can safely surrender their babies. But this week, as South Africa marks National Child Protection Week, this vital life-saving device is under legal scrutiny.

Hot Cares visited Door of Hope to hear from Nadene Grabham, the organisation’s passionate Operations Director, as she fights to keep these boxes legal. In partnership with Baby Savers South Africa, Nadene and her team are on a mission to ensure that no child is abandoned in a pit latrine, rubbish dump, or storm drain ever again.
