From kidney transplant to matric finals: Hot Cares steps in

When you hear Stephanie Niemand’s story, it’s impossible not to be moved by her courage and love for her son. As a dedicated theatre nurse, Stephanie has spent her career caring for other people’s families. But this year, the person on the operating table was her own child.

Zander has battled kidney disease for years, enduring endless medical appointments, medication, and the constant uncertainty that comes with a chronic illness. Earlier this year, he finally received a life-saving kidney transplant – with Stephanie selflessly stepping forward as his living donor. It was the ultimate act of a mother’s love.

The transplant was a success, but the road since then has not been easy. Stephanie experienced complications after surgery, which meant an extended recovery and a significant loss of income. As a single mom who relies heavily on overtime shifts to cover Zander’s ongoing medical costs, this has placed immense strain on the family’s finances.

At the same time, Zander – now in matric – has been pushing through his exams and schoolwork, determined not to let his health struggles define his future. With the help of his school and his incredibly resilient mom, he continues to fight for the normal teenage life he deserves.
