From one borrowed stove to hundreds fed: Patrichea’s story inspires action

At Hot Cares, we believe in uplifting those who uplift others—and few embody this more than Patrichea Lucinda Maine. From her home in Newlands, Patrichea runs Sizo Community Outreach, a self-funded initiative that has grown into a beacon of love, safety, and transformation.

Over the past eight years, Patrichea has opened her heart and her home to 43 foster children, and is currently raising six, along with her niece and two daughters. But her impact stretches even further. She feeds the homeless in the Newclare informal settlement, supports a local old age home with food and celebrations, and mentors the youth through impactful workshops—including a recent session for 80 boys on the dangers of domestic violence.

Her commitment to dignity and empowerment doesn’t stop there. Patrichea uses two ageing sewing machines to teach elderly residents and community members vital life skills—tools of purpose, confidence, and economic upliftment. She also prepares daily meals for her household and her broader community with a borrowed two-plate stove and a failing oven.

Despite these challenges, Patrichea continues to show up—day after day—for those who need her most.

Her selflessness moved us deeply, and with the help of our friends at Silverstar, we’re stepping in to assist. Together, we’re donating a brand-new stove and oven, and covering the full servicing of both her sewing machines, to the value of R20 000.
