Heroes in action: Volunteer paramedics get a powerful boost from Hot Cares

In a world where access to healthcare is often dictated by income, ComMed stands as a beacon of hope for those in desperate need. This 100% volunteer-driven emergency medical response service operates across Roodepoort and Randburg, offering free, professional assistance to individuals who might otherwise wait hours for help—or receive none at all.

ComMed’s mission is simple: provide immediate, life-saving care, particularly for those without medical aid. Staffed by HPCSA-registered professionals, ComMed is a fully registered EMS provider that operates solely on donations, putting every cent toward keeping vehicles on the road and medics equipped for action.

One of their most pressing needs has been replacing outdated ECG monitors—critical tools used to assess and manage cardiac emergencies in the field. Recognising the urgency of this request and the heart behind the work ComMed does, Hot Cares teamed up with medical equipment supplier EcoMed to make a meaningful difference.

On what Neil van der Merwe thought would be a routine interview, he was surprised live in studio with a brand-new, top-of-the-line ECG monitor valued at R143,750—courtesy of EcoMed and Hot Cares. The moment was emotional and powerful, a small token of appreciation for years of selfless service.

But we didn’t stop there.

To support ComMed’s ongoing operational needs, Hot Cares also donated an additional R20,000 towards medical consumables—ensuring they can continue responding quickly, stabilising patients, and saving lives.
