Hot Cares fuels growth at a young school with a big heart

In 2024, when Nape Kgadema walked away from a stable banking career to follow her calling into Early Childhood Development, she chose growth over comfort.

She opened ABC ECD in Winnie Mandela informal settlement with a simple but powerful belief: that every child deserves a safe, nurturing place to learn, even if their families cannot afford school fees. Since then, she has welcomed children with open arms, often refusing to turn anyone away. Today, 25 little ones fill her classrooms, guided by a passionate team of three staff members, and supported by Nape’s Level 4 ECD qualification as she works toward Level 5.

But growth needs protection.

The harsh Gauteng sun made outdoor play difficult, and sometimes unsafe. And for young children, outdoor play isn’t a luxury. It’s essential for physical strength, confidence, creativity and social development.

That’s where Hot Cares stepped in.

By funding shade cloth, poles and full installation, and equipping classrooms with puzzles, books, musical instruments, perceptual games, and art supplies, Hot Cares has helped create a safer, richer learning environment for these children.

“This space has changed everything for our children,” Nape shared.
