Hot Cares helps 1000 Days of Grace support moms and tiny fighters

From the first heartbeat to a second birthday, the first 1 000 days set the course for a child’s life. That’s where 1000 Days of Grace steps in—walking alongside moms through pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood with hands-on care, lactation support, and practical essentials across facilities like Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, Lenasia Clinic, Discoverers Hospital, and Hillbrow MOU.

At Rahima Moosa, the foundation’s doulas and lactation team stand in the gap when capacity is stretched, offering calm guidance in high-pressure moments and ensuring newborns—especially those who are small, premature, or medically fragile—get the healthiest start possible. Their Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) unit is a lifeline, pairing skin-to-skin care with the crucial nutrition of breastmilk.

But for many mothers, maintaining a milk supply while their babies fight to grow stronger can be an enormous challenge. That’s why Hot Cares is stepping in with a very specific form of support. We are covering the cost of 16 hospital-grade electric breast pumps—one for every bed in the KMC unit—at a value of R56,000. These pumps will ensure that every premature and fragile baby in the unit has equal access to life-sustaining breastmilk, while giving mothers the dignity and empowerment of being actively involved in their child’s care.

This story is about dignity as much as it is about health outcomes. It’s about empowering mothers to participate fully in their babies’ care, building confidence and resilience in a season when every gram of weight gain and every hour of bonding matters. It’s about practical solutions—like making specialised breastfeeding support available in-hospital and through an outpatient lactation clinic—so that fewer infants are readmitted for failure to thrive, and more families can leave the ward stronger.
