Hot Cares helps give Paige the mobility she deserves

Hot Cares recently met 10-year-old Paige Bedworth — a bright little girl who’s faced more medical challenges than most adults. Born prematurely and diagnosed with oesophageal atresia, Paige endured multiple surgeries and long NICU stays. Complications led to brain damage and the development of cerebral palsy, meaning she relies on specialised equipment and full-time care to move, learn and communicate. Yet, through it all, her family has fought to keep her at home and surrounded by love. As her dad Jono says, “I would have it no other way.”

Paige has outgrown her current wheelchair, and her medical aid benefits are exhausted. For a child with limited motor function, a properly fitted wheelchair isn’t a luxury — it’s essential medical equipment. The right chair supports posture, reduces the risk of pressure sores and spinal issues, and keeps her safe during daily activities. Just as importantly, it improves her quality of life by enabling her to engage in learning, therapy and play with greater comfort and confidence.

Friends and family are rallying too: members of Reading Country Club are organising a charity golf day to contribute towards Paige’s ongoing needs and school fees. That community spirit inspired us to act.

Hot Cares will cover the full cost of Paige’s new specialised wheelchair — up to R42,000 — so she can regain the comfort, mobility and dignity she deserves. It’s a practical intervention with a profound impact: a chair that fits Paige today, supports her growth tomorrow and lightens the load on a family that has given everything for their daughter’s wellbeing.
