HOT Cares Helps Social Work Student Complete Her Degree

The world needs more social workers.

That’s because they have an important role in society.

As defined by the Bureau of Labour Statistics in the United States, a social worker is a “skilled professional that helps individuals, groups, and families cope with life’s challenges, through methods like counselling, psychotherapy, research, and even policymaking. By helping people get on the right track, social workers ensure that everyone in the community can adequately perform their social roles.”

You can see why we need them and why an email from Quinton Fouche touched us.

It told us here at Hot Cares about his wife Jolene and how she hasn’t been able to complete her social work studies.

So, we got The Big Joburg Drive team at HOT 102.7FM to give the couple a call to see if Hot Cares could help.

HOT Cares Helps Social Work Student Complete Her Degree

On the call, Jolene explained how she has been in the social field since 2001 and has worked at several different organizations, whilst also running various community projects, parenting programs, youth programs etc.

She’s currently registered as a ‘social auxiliary worker’ at Springs and Kwa Thema Child Welfare Society in Springs, but would desperately like to complete her studies.

Unfortunately, that’s going to cost Quinton and Jolene R16 000, which is currently out of their reach, as they are still recovering from Quinton’s retrenchment. His previous job required the family to travel extensively, with Jolene having to study long-distance. Unfortunately, the retrenchment meant she had to, for a time, put her studies and progress on hold.

But, there’s a bigger picture.

Jolene completing her studies and receiving her degree would be a huge milestone for not only her, but her entire family.

When Hot Cares heard about all the incredible work Jolene is doing, we knew that we had to step up and assist her. Not only so that she could continue doing her invaluable work, but also fulfil her dream of being the first female in her family to not only complete a university degree, but also complete her high school education.

That’s why Hot Cares will be covering the remaining R16 000 needed to complete her studies, ensuring that she finishes and gets her Honours in social work!

We know that Jolene will go on to great things and hope that one day she can come and assist Hot Cares with some of our needs.
