Mannie the Lion comes home to a new life in Africa
For the first time in his life, Mannie the Lion has felt African soil beneath his paws.
Born and raised in a theme park in the Netherlands, Mannie spent his days surrounded by concrete walls, far from the wild landscapes his species calls home. Isolated, without a pride, and never knowing the feeling of grass or open sky, his life was one of silent suffering. But now, thanks to the incredible efforts of Stichting Leeuw in the Netherlands and The Lions Foundation in South Africa, Mannie is finally where he belongs—on African soil, beginning a new chapter.
He was flown safely to Johannesburg on a long-haul KLM flight and transported to his new home at the Lions Foundation sanctuary on the Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve. There, a specially built 1.5-hectare enclosure awaits him, complete with feeding and separation rooms to help ease his transition.
His rehabilitation will be slow and gentle. And although Mannie can never be released into the wild—years of human interaction have made that dangerous—he can still live a life filled with freedom, dignity, and enrichment.
“Mannie will never be able to live completely wild again,” says Lloreen le Roux of the Lions Foundation. “But he can be a lion again. We call it ‘assisted living’—where he has space, dignity, enrichment, and the care he needs to live a peaceful, proud life.”
That’s where Hot Cares stepped in. To support Mannie’s healing journey, Hot Cares has donated R50,000 to cover a range of his needs including a raised viewing platform, bales of hay and calming catnip for warmth and stress relief. special therapy balls to encourage stimulation and play and a contributions toward veterinary and nutritional care
“As soon as we heard Mannie’s story, we knew we wanted to help,” says the Hot Cares team. “This is more than just a rescue—it’s a homecoming. And we’re honoured to be part of his journey back to Africa, where he can reclaim a little of what he lost.”
Mannie’s return marks not only a second chance for one lion—but a powerful reminder of what’s possible when compassion crosses borders. We’ll be keeping a close eye on his progress, and sharing updates as he adapts to a life filled with grass, space, and lion-hearted love.
Welcome home, Mannie.
