Restoring sight, rebuilding lives: A gift of vision

At Hot Cares, we believe in transforming lives, and today, we are honored to stand alongside the Dis-Chem Foundation in making a profound difference for two individuals battling severe vision impairment.

Sibongile and Kgape have both endured the devastating effects of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a rare and life-altering condition that has left them with extreme eye dryness, pain, and visual impairment. Their journeys have been filled with medical interventions, surgeries, and countless struggles, yet hope remains.

Sibongile, once independent and supporting her son, lost her vision after her body rejected previous corneal implants. Now, she has one last chance—her specialist is willing to attempt a micro cornea transplant in her left eye. However, for the procedure to succeed, she urgently needs a specialized Eye Print Prosthetic scleral lens to keep her eye hydrated and protected.

Kgape, a correctional officer, faces daily challenges due to his vision loss. His ability to perform his duties safely and effectively is compromised, impacting not just his life but also those around him. The only solution to improve his vision and comfort is a medically necessary scleral lens.

These lenses, however, come at a cost that neither can afford—R82,934 in total.

That’s where Hot Cares and the Dis-Chem Foundation step in. Recognizing the life-changing impact these lenses will have, we are covering the full cost, ensuring that Miss Khumalo and Mr. Mashego receive the vision support they desperately need.

This is more than a donation; it’s a chance for them to regain independence, dignity, and hope for a brighter future.
