Securing what matters most: water, care and continuity at Chimp Eden

Back in March 2024, when Jane Goodall last visited Chimp Eden, Hot Cares stepped in to support the sanctuary with a much-needed security system—helping protect a space built on compassion, resilience, and purpose.

More than a year later, that legacy continues to grow.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Chimp Eden remains a place of healing for 33 rescued chimpanzees—each one carrying a story of trauma, now met with safety, structure, and care. Behind that transformation is a small but extraordinary team of caregivers who dedicate their lives to these animals.

“Every day is about giving them the dignity and care they deserve,” is a sentiment that echoes through the sanctuary.

But sustaining that level of care is no small task.

With feeding costs alone reaching around R145,000 a month, and ongoing infrastructure needs, the pressure is constant. And yet, the team continues—driven by passion, and a commitment to honouring Jane Goodall’s life’s work.

That’s where Hot Cares stepped in once again.

In response to the sanctuary’s most pressing needs, Hot Cares has funded seven 5,000-litre JoJo tanks to ensure reliable access to clean water—an essential resource for both the chimps and their environment. In addition, enrichment toys and materials have been provided to support the emotional wellbeing of the chimpanzees—helping them rediscover curiosity, play, and a sense of normalcy.

“These aren’t luxuries—they’re essential to their recovery,” explains the team.

It’s support that goes beyond the immediate—creating a more stable, sustainable future for the sanctuary.

Because when people come together to give, the impact doesn’t just change lives—it protects a legacy.
