Silverstar and Hot Cares back Rescue Expo with prevention that lasts

On Sunday, 12 October 2025, Johannesburg’s biggest gathering of ethical rescue and rehabilitation organisations comes together at Bryanston Market for the 4th Annual Rescue Expo — a day that celebrates compassion in action and shines a light on what really changes outcomes for animals: prevention and partnership.

For Hot Cares, the most urgent need is clear. Sterilisation isn’t just a medical procedure; it’s how you break the cycle before it starts. Every spay or neuter means fewer unwanted litters, less pressure on shelters already bursting at the seams, and more dignity for pet-loving families who simply lack the means. That’s why we’re proud to stand with The Rescue Collective and, together with our friends at Silverstar, help put lasting solutions on the table.

This year’s Expo builds on impressive momentum — last year welcomed over 1,800 visitors, 53 rescue groups and 12 pet-product partners — and adds a focused sterilisation drive with licensed mobile veterinary teams, supported by partners like Tales of Tails, Blue Bush Vet and Animal Health & Hydro Clinic. The target: to sterilise up to 50 animals, directly reducing overpopulation where it’s needed most. Silverstar is coming to the party with R30,000 to cover the costs of those procedures and contribute essential food supplies — a lifeline for under-resourced rescues caring for vulnerable animals every day.

Behind the Expo are passionate people who’ve put in the miles: Cheryl Hunter — registered wildlife rehabber and former Sandton SPCA lead — alongside a seasoned rescue team, coordinating a day that’s more than awareness; it’s measurable impact. And with food partnerships also in focus, donations on the day stretch even further, keeping bowls full and tails wagging.

Hot Cares is honoured to back the Rescue Expo in a way that makes a difference long after the tents come down — turning one day of action into years of prevention and hope for the animals (and people) who need it most.
